Subject Line: Cargo portfolio site builder for Students, Staff and Faculty

From: Josh Miller

Hello Cohort 20 & TCB,

We contacted Cargo Site Builder (https://cargo.site/) and received free access codes for all interested students, staff and faculty.

What is Cargo Site Builder?

Cargo is a site builder designed to meet the various needs of creative professionals. There is (of course) single portfolio type use — but you can also design and publish a whole group of sites, each with its own purpose. Simultaneously publish a portfolio, client presentations, idea boards, a profile site, a shop — basically any kind of site you need — all with a single account. We have developed it this way with the budgets of artists and designers in mind.

Design/publish one or many public sites

Real-time, multi-user editing

One price, no tiers or hidden price stacking

Edit & Publish using ongoing library of templates

Code: [redacted for privacy, please contact IT or Student Services for the code]

To activate, students enter it in the Promo Code area when upgrading their Cargo site. This provides a full one-year upgrade with no restrictions for the user. A new code will be provided every year, so that enrolled students can keep their sites upgraded.

Cargo is free while enrolled, after graduation the price is $14/month if billed annually or $19 on a month to month plan. They will send us a new code around this date every year and that code can only be shared with enrolled students or employed faculty/staff.

You may let your site lapse after graduation and reactivate it with payment anytime.

CDM also offers free portfolio site hosting in our datacentre but I usually don’t send out our own offer until the end of term 2. More on that later.

Might be fun to play around with Cargo for the time being, keep a local copy of your assets in case you do decide to switch to another platform later.

All the best,

Josh

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a great week 😊 This will be the final email I send to your personal email addresses. Moving forward, all communication from CDM will be to your CDM email address while you’re in this program.

I’ve attached a few copies of the slides from this week: orientation (first day), professional bio writing, and the session with Julia Lastovikova. If at any time you would like to refer back to these, you can find them on the SharePoint:  Launch Week.

We’d like to get your feedback on how Launch Week went, and also what topics/industries you are interested in learning about. This will inform future electives, panels, and workshops we provide. Please take some time to fill out our survey below:

Survey: https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/bsagNR (submissions are anonymous).

Headshots – If you didn’t get a chance to take headshots from our professional photographer on Wednesday, please contact Josh (Josh Miller josh@thecdm.ca), to schedule a time to take your picture for our website. For people who did take headshots, they will be ready in 2-3 weeks. We will share this out, and you will be able to select which photo to have on our website.

Submit your bio

  • Use this form to submit your bio and other profile information
  • If you don’t have a LinkedIn, I recommend you create a profile so that we can tag you in stories and/or share it with potential employers
  • Proofread your bio before submitting—if writing is not your strong suit, run it through AI with the prompt “check for grammar and spelling”
  • Take your time writing your bio—we share it out with employers so put your best foot forward
  • Due date is Friday, September 12

Reminders

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

[MDM Technology Equipment Funding Application Form]

Cohort 20,

Welcome to CDM!

You are all eligible for CDM’s $2000 Tech Scholarship. This scholarship is used to purchase a good laptop or other related equipment to help support you during the MDM program and beyond. If your current laptop is older than 2 years it is time for a new laptop.

You may use the scholarship in any of the first three terms.

Purchases must be approved by me, deadline for invoices is October 17 this term, so we’ll want your application completed, purchases made and invoices submitted to me before that date. You may also wait until term 2 or 3.

Please read the attached document for more information & discuss your needs with @Steven Suh or I in person.

Step 1: Pick something, with or without Steven or my assistance.

Step 2: Fill form and e-mail to Josh.

Step 3: After Josh approves, make your purchase.

Step 4: E-mail invoice to Josh.

We have great discounts in place with Lenovo and modest discounts for Apple and Dell . These are our preferred vendors, they offer quality hardware and excellent support warranties. We may be able to secure student pricing for other vendors as well, happy to look into that.

In nearly all cases, you will be looking for a Windows laptop with NVIDIA GPU, or a MacBook Pro.

Lenovo CDM friends and family store: https://www.lenovo.com/ca/members/en/pc/?groupId=thecdm

Dell store:
